Supacell review, will there be a season 2?

London rapper, producer and director Rapman aka Andrew Onwubolu MBE was behind Shiro's Story YouTube trilogy and 2019's Blue Story, which marked his writing and directorial debut.

Shiros Story

Supacell is a follow on from that, and cleverly coins a bunch of working class people whom are mostly all black with their own personal issues, and a link to sickle cell, a disease predominantly found in black people caused by a faulty gene.

Supacell takes the cast through their individual journeys, each discovering they have unique powers, while traversing the struggles of living in a black community in South London.

A full list of cast in Supacell.

  • Eddie Marsan as Ray
  • Nadine Mills as Sabrina
  • Eric Kofi-Abrefa as Andre

The series also slowly uncovers a shadowy agency, predominantly of white management, monitoring the use of powers through cctv.

Later on in the series a new character emerges, a faceless assassin.

The series ends with a showdown, the main character Krazy is a predominant figure in the series,  often the centre piece and anti protagonist of the show.

The show is gritty at parts, with stereotypical street life type scenes, and tear jerking moments.

The show tried to cover on time travel, however in reality, this is a story of 5 working class black people all brought together through some sort of tragedy, each with their own dog in the fight.

New characters like Jasmine offer an interesting series 2, and fuelled with rage because (No spoilers) Michael's mission at the end leaves people wanting a series 2.

The sci fi aspects are lacking, and the glowing yellow eyes are indictictive of a short film with low effects, that said, some of the fight scenes are Hollywood worthy.

It's a layman's sci fi, made interesting with a Spotify worthy soundtrack.

The camera work is good, and the characters are outstanding. Pretty sure BMW sponsored to show.

My predictions are watching the team of 5 work together, with their own dog in the fight, peppered with offhand references to the butterfly effect, and the take down of the white leaders of the shadowy organisation.

Honest Review

The truth is that the whole series is premised behind Michael, Tazer, Rodney, Andre and Dionne.

Michael the fearless leader, Tazer a ghetto Smurf with invisibility, Rodney the wheeler dealer with flash like strength and a decent level of sarcasm, Andre with hulk like super strength almost akin to thing in fantastic 4, there's  Dionne with telekinisis, she's a strong character with second in command leadership abilities.

It's Marvell meets London in a way, with that gritty south London feel and lots more empathy and bonding.

The relationship between Michael and Dionne was sketchy, considering she's the reason the whole thing will have a season 2, there isn't much chance for flashbacks, however since Micheal has unique powers, may be this will evolve.

The sci fi aspect is basic time travel, and the core premise seems to be that sickle cell can mutate into a superpower.

This series has a very much black vs white feel, it's almost racist, offsetting the shadowy organisation as a white supremacy.

Will there be a series 2

Reportedly, Rapman has written the series for 2 or 3 series, the average life span of a good Netflix series, with stranger things topping 4 seasons.

Netflix always holds the final decision of these things, probably because they're footing the bill.

A gritty drama, with some good effects, lacking in the sci fi genre, with some tear jearking moments. The characters are built well, but there are bonds that could be explored more. The 5 main characters are built up well, some more than others.
